Where the Wild Things Are

I'm convinced my neighborhood is the wild kingdom. We live on the western edge of the Austin hill country where there tends to be more wild life than in other parts of the city. That, combined with the fact that our house backs to a nature preserve, has led me to witness more "nature" than I care to see outside of a zoo.

Here's an unabridged list of some of the critters seen in and around my neighborhood (and some, eek!, in my house):

-Ring tail (I know....I didn't know what it was either until I looked it up)
-Tarantula
-Scorpions
-Rattle snake (Okay, I didn't actually see this one, but my neighbors had one in their backyard)
-Coral snake - two of them (Yes, red then yellow, not friend of Jack...)
-Mouse (Which I swear made a purposeful beeline at me while I was running)
-Coyote
-Fox
-Raccoon
-Armadillo
-Lizards (I'm not talking your average gecko..)
-Panther (Well, not really, but I had to throw that in for drama's sake)

To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, here's a picture of a lizard my friend, Trina, found in her yard (Trina doesn't live in my neighborhood, but she does live in the same part of town):

See what I'm talking about? Wild kingdom in suburbia. Where is Jack Hanna when you need him?

As the picture shows, everything is bigger in Texas! Hope I don't see any of those creatures while we are visiting! Kiley would probably love seeing something like that though...she has been carrying around a big blue rubber beetle all week. I try really hard not to say "eek" when she puts it on me. I know its not real and it still gives me the creeps!

That wild thing you've depicted is the Texas Spiny Lizard! I know this because our predatory specimen, Max aka the common house cat, brought me one as a gift a while back. Straight up plopped it down at the corner of the step to the shower. A heck of a thing to see when you're still wiping out the crusties. At the time, I thought it was going to spew venom or blood at me like a horned toad. Thankfully, they're harmless.

We've also been gifted with rat snakes, several birds, frogs, mice and more recently visited by a baby raccoon.

P.S. I was talking to Billy yesterday and he let me know of your respective blogs. Congratualations on getting published! I'm truly envious.

Musings on motherhood, career, family and anything else that floats into my mind. Lucky you.
