Will is sick. He's had a nasty cough that has lingered for the past six weeks. I've taken him to see the doctor a few times, but she kept telling me "it's just a cold". Well, over the weekend the cold morphed from a cough into full-blown liquid oozing from every orifice on Will's face (including eyes) and a fever of 102. Back to the doctor this morning we went. Turns out the little guy now has an ear infection (first one since he got tubes 9 months ago), pink eye in both eyes (Have you ever seen a toddler's eyes glued shut upon waking? Me either, until now), and a sinus infection to boot. We are leaving on a jet plane this Wednesday to spend Christmas in Illinois, so I quickly got the prescribed antibiotics and eye drops and immediately started administering them in hopes of health returning in the next two days.
The silver lining in all of this is that Will is a super champ when it comes to taking medicine-- opens his mouth wide, doesn't fight it, swallows it easily. This was the first time I've had to give him eye drops though, so I was worried about what kind of fight would ensue to get those little bits of liquid squirted into his eyes (and I've heard horror stories from fellow parents). Turns out Will is a champ in this area, too. I told him to lie down ("diaper change!", he exclaimed, and I had to tell him, no, that's not what we're doing). Anyway, he got horizontal, I held his eye open and--squirt!--no problems. He literally didn't bat an eye. I got to the second eye and same thing. No fight, no holding down, no crying. After I was done he said "all better!" and ran off to play. I guess if he has to be sick, I'm lucky that at least he's a compliant sick kid.
