Well, I knew this day would come. The day when my son was old enough to embarrass me in public with his words. Now that he's two and a half, he is a talking machine. It dawned on me the other day that he only speaks in complete sentences now--no more one word or few word phrases. When did that happen? Seems like it was overnight.
Anyway, now that he's talking and we have full blown conversations (which is pretty cool), along with that comes the potential for him to slip out some things in front of people that might not be appropriate (kids, after all, have no filter). One thing he's really into lately is noticing people's emotions. Like if I have a stressed or worried look on my face, he will say something to the effect of "you're not happy mommy?" You get the gist. The kid is noticing how people are feeling.
I had to get some blood taken last week, so Will and I were sitting in the waiting room at the lab waiting to be called back. The room was pretty full of people when a person walked in that Will immediately noticed. Let's just say that this person was sort of a Pat. It was clear to me that this was a woman, but I could see how she could have been mistaken for a man, especially on the part of a two year old. She sat down near us and Will proceeded to point directly at her and loudly say "HE'S not happy, mommy? HE'S not happy? Why is HE not happy?" I tried to play it off like it wasn't happening and redirect his attention to something else, but everyone in the room knew that my son was clearly calling he a she, including the she herself.
I've never been so happy to be called back to have blood taken in my whole life, which fortunately happened pretty quickly after "the incident". Thank God for small favors.
